Being around Kit softened her up somewhat, but yeah, Carol herself isn't really my type, I guess. The only character I can think of that I enjoyed of that type (brash, best at everything and they know it) is Starbuck from the BSG reboot (eta: and Aeryn from Farscape too), and she had a lot of vulnerability and anger issues going for her that made her much more human to me than Carol, who is a bit of a stereotypical ~awesome lady~, at least in DeConnick's run. Don't get me wrong, I like great female characters in general, but there is a certain cookie-cutter "badass who wisecracks and kicks butt" character mold that can result in little development. I'm enjoying She-Hulk and Ms. Marvel much more.
Rocket Girl reads a lot better in trade, I think. I found it a lot easier when I could look across the issues and connect the dots. I think Montclare and Reeder have said that volume two will be more about Dayoung's daily life fitting in and finding her place in the 80s, so hopefully we will see more character development and quiet moments. You're right, zany adventures will only get us so far.
