Fic recs: Iron Man canon AUs

Comments:
A thoroughly creepy and harrowing story about how Tony's trauma might have taken a different path. The POV character is Christine Everheart, and her voice is fantastic. Definitely gave me that creeping feeling of horror.
Almost No One Makes It Out
Characters: Tony Stark, Pepper Potts, James "Rhodey" Rhodes

What would have happened if Tony hadn't been born filthy rich? A military AU.
Comments:
After I read it once, I went back to read it again, and then stared at my computer screen and legit teared up, both for in-story and why-isn't-there-more-of-this reasons. Despite the massive change in Tony's personal background, his voice and personality are very recognizable (including self-destructive tendencies), except maybe a bit more cynical and bitter because life hasn't handed him everything on a platter and he's had to fight tooth and nail for everything he's gotten. I love original flavor MCU Tony, but I love this guy even more.
There are two stories running parallel: the background (which covers most of the AU'd events of IM1) and main plot (after). That doesn't work for me, and I didn't get a lot out of it, so if it doesn't work for you just read all the italicized stuff first and then go back to the beginning, which has way more punch that way anyway.
